Typical Ailments and Healing Chiropractic Techniques

At Lee's Summit Family Chiropractic, a wide variety of ailments can be treated easily and painlessly. Below are a few common issues I see in my profession. If these sound similar to the pain you're feeling, I can help your pain go away through techniques specific to your pain.

Typical Ailments

Whiplash

Whiplash, also called neck sprain or neck strain, is injury to the neck. Whiplash is characterized by a collection of symptoms that occur following damage to the neck. In whiplash, the inter-vertebral joints (located between vertebrae), discs, and ligaments, cervical muscles, and nerve roots may become damaged. Whiplash is caused by an abrupt backward and/or forward jerking motion of the head, often as a result of a car accident.

Sciatica

Sciatica is pain originating in the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back down the back of your legs. Symptoms of sciatcia include burning in the leg, pain in the back of the leg when sitting, leg weakness, shooting pain, and more. Causes of sciatica may include lumbar spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, pregnancy, and other factors.

Plantar Fascitis

Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain. It is caused by repeated strain on the plantar fascia, the ligament that connects the heel bone to the toes, supporting the arch of the foot. A strained plantar fascia causes weakness, swelling, and inflammation, especially in one or both heels. Causes of plantar fasciitis include rolling the feet inward while walking; having high arches or flat feet; and running, walking, or standing for along periods of time.

Migraines

Migraines and other types of headaches, such as tension headache and sinus headache, are painful. Migraine symptoms include a pounding headache, nausea, vomiting, and light sensitivity and are treated with anti nausea drugs and abortive or preventive medications. Headache remedies include pain relievers.

Joint Pain

Joints form the connections between bones. They provide support and help you move. Any damage to the joints from disease or injury can interfere with your movement and cause a lot of pain. Many different conditions can lead to painful joints, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, bursitis, gout, strains, sprains, and other injuries. Joint pain is extremely common.

Healing Techniques

Diversified Technique

Diversified technique is characterized by a high-velocity, low-amplitude thrust. Diversified is considered the most generic chiropractic manipulative technique and is differentiated from other techniques in that it's objective is to restore proper movement and alignment of spine and joint dysfunction.

Flexion Distraction

Flexion distraction is a painless non-invasive procedure performed using a special treatment table that allows the practitioner to gently stretch and bend the back in various directions while he/she adds gentle pressure to different parts of the spine. There are no jerking movements at all. The table moves in a smooth rhythmic fashion as the practitioner moves his/her hands into different positions.

Activator

An activator is a chiropractic treatment method and device created by Arlan Fuhr as an alternative to manual manipulation of the spine or extremity joints. The device is categorized as a mechanical force manual assisted instrument which is generally regarded as a softer chiropractic treatment technique.

Sacral Occipital

Sacral Occipital Technique (SOT) is designed to assist the chiropractor in locating and correcting the primary misalignments. This is accomplished by evaluating indicators relating to specific category of misalignments. With a focus on correcting the primary causative insult to the nervous system, SOT provides a comprehensive, concise, and reproducible technique. The SOT technique is highly effective in infants as well as adults.

Graston

Graston technique is an innovative, patented form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization that enables the practitioner to effectively break down scar tissue and fascial restrictions. The technique utilizes specially designed instruments to specifically detect and effectively treat areas exhibiting soft tissue fibrosis or chronic inflammation.
